"I don’t rap into English. The market is too hard.

The competition is too big. I would do one or two

songs, but not a whole album. I serve primarily the

 French market

Our Canadian neighbors are spawning talented musicians left and right. However, in this case; the United States shares credibility for the beginnings of a talented artist by the name of Larock.   Larock was born in Newark, New Jersey by Haitian natives and later moved to Montreal, Canada around the age of six.  It is equally intriguing to speak with an artist that is focused to boost his career primarily in the French market, but is open-minded to the idea that American music lovers may be interested in an English translation of his songs.

Larock declares that he can hold a tune as a Hip-Pop artist, but does not promote himself as a singer. He states, “I am more about creating music for the world to dance to and have fun, “ as he also caters to the hip-hop market but sways away from promoting violence in his music. “. I am a lover boy/b-boy. There is no gangsta music. I call it b-boy classic,” says Larock during his conversation with iFLOW.

When asked where his mindset is at this moment in terms of his music, Larock answered…

I am looking for a record deal in Europe. I got offers already in Montreal but the market is small here and artists do not make a lot of money here. I am looking for a contract in Europe. My solo album is done and I am searching for the right record deal right now.”

Because of the competitiveness of English-speaking hip hop artists, it has been found very difficult for a French speaking artist to break ground and become discovered in the United States.  The demand for certain types of music is also based on what the radio stations are willing to play. An artist like Larock and many others are smart to take their music over seas where European music listeners are more open minded to the variety that even American artists have come to appreciate.

When asked whether he would ever perform in New York, Larock’s response was that he use to rap in English but not any more and prefers to rap in French because the English market was too hard and the competition is too big. He also states that he may add one or two songs on an album in English but that’s about it… “I serve primarily the French market”.

Based on Larock’s knowledge, he states that the demand for hip hop music is not on a high level in Canada; which causes him to migrate to an area where his art form will be greatly appreciated.  He has not yet visited France to date, but will definitely do so in the near future; especially if he is invited to perform there.

With his solo album being completed and in addition to lining up his performance dates for Fall/Autumn 2009, Larock has plans to record his music video during the Summer 2009. iFLOW may run into him during our visit to Montreal in May 2009.
